Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: For Doug: Yes Doug, I can confirm that "Captain" Howard Hunt was in fact the Company Commander of Oscar Company Rangers in Alaska. He had the dubious distinction of Commanding that Company when it was Disbanded. After that, Howard Hunt accept a RIF, and was made a SSG, but retained his Commissioned Rank in the Army Reserves. He retired as either a Major or Lieutenant Colonel, and at what would have been his 30th year of service, he automatically reverted to the higher Grade for Pension Purposes. He retired from Active Duty as a SFC. |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Mike Keohane Message: Fifty-two years ago, the Berlin Wall went up. Three Ranger Instructors (Sgt Fish & myself from the RMC and SFC Sandlin from Elgin) were assigned to the Sixth Infantry and there was, at least, not counting officers, one or two tabbed Rangers in each line company. I don't know about the other's plans but I had my eye on the marshalling yards in East Berlin as a good target of opportunity if the balloon went up. I was tasked to take two officers from Seventh Army on an intelligence patrol in East Berlin. One look at the brand new "flying saucers" and low quarters, and I "made" them as SF types from Bad Tolz. I got a bit pissed at the attention they were paying to "my" railroad marshalling yard so I dropped a few names from Bad Tolz and said I had "dibs" on the trains. They took it in the spirit I intended and the rest of the tour was highly technical. |
